Slaty Skimmer (Libellula incesta) Tentative

Starting in late May, there appeared an abundance and some diversity of Odonata - dragonflies, skimmers, darners, and dashers around the detention ponds, especially among the blooming Pickerel Weed. This (likely older female) kept returning to the same perch and posing for me. According to NC Parks, Slaty Skimmers are very pugnacious and active fliers, if the species is around, you should quickly know it! Yes, that is true as I can attest. It is definitely one of the state's most abundant dragonfly species.
