Male Red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)   This male is a regular visitor to the same tree along the wooded trail to check for insects in the bark. The Red Breasted Woodpecker nests in dead hardwood or pine trees or in dead limbs of live trees, and fence posts. The same pair may nest in the same tree year after year, but typically excavate a new cavity each year, often placing the new one beneath the previous year’s. They commonly have 1 to 3 broods.
