Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus)   Eastern Towhees tend to live primarily in the undergrowth and spend a lot of their time scratching among the leaf litter by hopping backwards on both feet as they search for small insects and seeds. The species name - erythrophthalmus is a Greek reference to the red eye found in Towhees from most populations.
